Understanding Bipolar Disorder

Mania and manic-depressive psychosis (bipolar disorder)

The definition of mania

Mania is endogenous psychoses, rarely appears alone, more often associated with depression in a circle, as manic-depressive psychosis, and then called the circulatory (bipolar psychosis). Mania starts at a young age, and for her characteristic disorders of thinking, affect and motor skills. Thoughts well up torrent, and the mood was lifted for no reason and patient radiates serenity, happiness and confidence. Over time a patient is exhausted.

The definition of manic-depressive psychosis (bipolar disorder)

Manic-depressive psychosis (bipolar psychosis) is endogenous mental disease in which the alternating periods of mania and depression. It belongs to the grave of endogenous psychoses. Replacement of the phase is indefinite and came up short and long manic depressive periods, or vice versa. It does not damage the personality of the patient, and between attacks the patient looks healthy. Something is more common in the larger person. The clinical picture depends on the stage in which the disease is located, or manic depressive.
The world would be a very boring place if everyone’s spirits were always the same, nor merry nor sad. Our moods are rarely completely stable – small things can cheer us, or agitated and sad. Some people are aware of proper samples for changes in your mood. For some, spring is a period of improved mood the weather starts to improve, and winter is a period of lower mood that night, becoming longer and the days get shorter. Some women may notice changes in his mood, depending on the different phases of the menstrual cycle. In this mood, not a problem in repeating patterns of mood, but the problem lies in the degree of increased or decreased initial mood and later consequences of decisions or actions that can be done in a very redundant in the mood (mania) or worse mood (depression).

What are the symptoms?

It is important to distinguish three elements of the disorder:
- depression-symptoms
- symptoms of manic
- cycle of these two moods.

Symptoms of mania can include:

- Irritable
- ecstasy-ecstasy
- rotation stages and irritability
- and back and a very fast
- hyperactivity
- poor concentration, easy demolition of the concentration
- less and no sleep-eating-an increase of sexual desire
- fast jumping from topic to topic during a conversation
- making it difficult person listen to him to accompany him
- talking fast, making it difficult to understand the words spoken
- grandiose ideas

In addition, there are cycles in which they can repeat. It can be presented in several different forms:
-mixed form. It is possible that the person suffers from a number of manic symptoms, and at the same time suffer from severe depressive thoughts. This is often especially if a person feels and knows what she is going through which it passes.

- cyclic form. Symptoms of mania may be accompanied by symptoms of depression by almost a regular pattern. These mood changes can occur in from one day up to a month. Less frequently the case that some people experience only a period of depression or mania, but within a regular recurring patterns.

How common is this disorder?

About 1% of the general population will develop bipolar disorder during their lives. If you have blood relatives who suffer from bipolar disorder, then the chance of developing the disease is greater – about 12% of people whose brother or a sister suffering from bipolar disorder will develop the same disease.
What can I do for self-help?
Track your mood

With any disorder that is repeated in cycles, half the battle in overcoming the disease is tracking where you are in the cycle at any time. To meet the bipolar disorder, it is sometimes necessary to think about this disorder as you would think about asthma or asthmatic diabetic diabetes. They need to take daily monitoring of respiratory capacity or levels of sugar, and then plan what you will continue to work and how to behave on that day. Similarly, with bipolar disorder, you can monitor your mood and thoughts. It helps you notice changes in mood that may occur prior to relapse. It is still possible to come to relapse, but now you can plan.
Have someone you trust who will monitor your mood

It is important to have a trusted friend or carer. You can identify a small deal, every time they detect a relapse (return of illness), they will take you to the point, after which both can take real steps toward a subsequent recurrence. That could mean taking a few days off to rest, review whether you have recently taken too much on yourself, or visit a psychiatrist.

What kind of professional help is there?

For people whose mood swings are highly variable and can not be successfully regulated by the techniques of monitoring of mood and thought, an expert, a psychiatrist will prescribe medication-lithium. It has properties of stabilizing mood swings, but it is very important to maintain proper levels of drug in the blood. Too many drugs can be toxic, while too low dose will have no effect on mood. For these reasons, a person treated lithium, have regular visits to health institutions and to check drug levels in blood.
